Richard Wentworth (b. 1947, Samoa) is intrigued by contingency - playing a leading role in the New British Sculpture movement of the 1970’s, his work subverts the function of objects, capturing the provisional ways in which people modify the world they inhabit. His photography offers insight to the unusual or counter-intuitive behaviour of familiar things. His work over the last five decades, as well as his teaching, support and encouragement of artists from the YBAs to the
present, has shaped the landscape of art in the UK. Wentworth is represented by Lisson Gallery and Peter Freeman, Inc NY, and his major solo presentations include Galerie Azzedine Alaïa, Paris; Whitechapel Gallery, London; 52nd Venice Biennale; Tate Liverpool; Artangel, London; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; and Serpentine Gallery, London.
